NorthForkLand Children's Exhibition Opens

NorthForkLand is ready to receive youngsters of all
ages!
SOUTHOLD, NY. The Southold Historical Society was
pleased to open NorthForkLand in its Winter Gallery on February 26, 2005.
Developed by the Society’s Education of Youth Committee, the interactive
exhibition is comprised of five distinctive areas, each designed to familiarize
visitors with an aspect of the North Fork’s history. While designed primarily
for youngsters of kindergarten age through Grade 4, NorthForkLand has appeal for
all ages.
Each area is designed to teach children (and adult visitors)
about a different aspect of our history. From creating gravestone rubbings
to standing on the dock and learning about the many varieties of fish found
locally, every part of this exhibition will entice the viewer to learn more
about the North Fork.
The exhibition will be open to the public 1-4 p.m. on Saturday
and Sunday from February 26 through May 8 excluding March 27. Parents are
encouraged to visit with their children to participate in the available
activities and learn about the rich history of the area.
NorthForkLand will be available to school groups by
appointment only Monday through Friday, through May 6. Groups of 25 maximum can
be accommodated accompanied by a minimum of 3 adults; the program takes an hour
and fifteen minutes. No pre-visit preparation is necessary, however, a theme
should be selected for a plastic covered paper quilt the youngsters will color
and take back to the classroom.
Exposure to history can be fun! Bring your class to
NorthForkLand and let them dress in colonial-style clothing, “fish” in our
“pond,” rub gravestones, make a class quilt, visit Then and Now on the computer
and organize a map of the North Fork.
Groups of up to 24 may visit Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m. by appointment only. Contact the Society office at 765-5500 for more
details and/or to schedule a visit.
