Music of the Civil War to be presented at the Southold Historical Society July 10th

SOUTHOLD, NY. The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that on July, 10th 2004 music of the American Civil War will be presented by Sampawams Creek, the noted musical group with strong ties to Long Island.

Sampawams Creek was formed by Tim and Mike Fitall as an outlet for their interest in period American music. When deciding on the name it is easy to come up with a meaningful one. Sampawams Creek is a real place, a small waterway located in Babylon, L. I., near where the Fitall’s grew up.

The word “Sampawams” dates back to at least 1689 and comes from the name of a local Indian who lived and planted nearby the waterway. The word means "straight walker" or "an upright or just man." The present creek forms the boundary between the town of Islip and the village of Babylon.

Tim and Mike’s group is focused on early American music and will be performing three times at the Society this summer. Later in the season they will perform music from the time of the American revolution and music that was popular during the golden age of the American whaling industry.

The first performance will take place this Saturday, July 10th, 2004 at 2pm under the great pine at the Society’s Maple Lane Complex in Southold. This performance is FREE to the public and does not require reservations. For further information, please contact the Society at (631) 765-5500.
