"Hooked by the Bay" Exhibition to Open!

“Hooked by the Bay”, a collection of tapestry pieces by fiber artists of the East End, will open in the Mayne Gallery in the Ann Currie Bell House on July 23 and be on view through August 28, 2005.

“Hooked by the Bay” is curated and will be installed by Society member Jean Cooper. A 1952 graduate of Cornell University, Cooper is noted for her enterprise "The Long Island Rug School," which she operates on the eastern end of Long Island, NY. The school has thrived since its founding, and now has four other experts on the faculty. Besides working in Southold, during the late summer Jean teaches hooking and dyeing on both coasts, Oregon in June and Massachusetts in August.

Included in the exhibition will be the display of a special piece hooked by lifelong East Ender and renowned fiber artist Ruth G. Grathwohl who died recently at 98 years of age. She was a long time member of the well known artisans group The Old Town Arts and Crafts Guild.

The exhibition will be open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4pm.

For further information please call the Society at 765-5500.
