North Fork Annual Exhibition to Open in August!

July 10, 2014 PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE “North Fork Annual Juried Art Exhibition Set for August 9-23” SOUTHOLD, NY. The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce it is hosting an exhibition of paintings/sculpture this August as part of the first annual “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition that will feature a $500 purchase prize that will be awarded to the best artwork in the exhibit. The show will be held in the Society’s Reichert Family Center’s Cosden-Price Gallery. This exhibit will be on display from August 9 through August 23, 2014 in the gallery, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold, NY. The $500 “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” – which will be awarded to the best work in the show - is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946). A native of Scotland who trained extensively in Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929 and settled in Southold, from where he traveled up and down the east coast, painting portraits and local scenery. His wife, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell, was the founder and first president of the Southold Historical Society, where a number of his paintings can be viewed. Artists from all over the east end of Long Island were invited to participate in the exhibition, as long as they either ‘resided on’ or ‘worked on’ the North Fork. Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Out of the submissions, only 20 works will be selected to be included in the “North Fork Annual” exhibition. It will be from those works that the purchase prize winner will be selected. The work selected as the winner of the prize will join the permanent collection of the historical society. The winner will be announced at the opening reception for the exhibition, which is being held on Friday, August 8 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. All of the remaining artworks selected for the exhibition will be available for sale at that time and for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibit will be on display in the Reichert Family Center, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold, NY from August 9 through August 23, 2014, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 1-4pm. For more information on this exhibit or other Society programs, please contact the Southold Historical Society at (631) 765-5500.
