Founding Families Weekend Tours

June 3 and 4, 2017

Southold Historical Society is proud to present a series of tours for our visitors on Founding Families Weekend.

When registering at the Museum Complex or at Horton Point Lighthouse, please sign up for the tour you’re interested in (Space is limited.). You will then receive a “ticket” and will be told where the tour is starting. More details and tickets for Founding Families Weekend available here.

Saturday, June 3

9:30am and 11:00am Walking Tour of Southold: Discovering the Main Road! (1 hour)

Tour Guide: Dan McCarthy, Southold Historical Society Researcher

Dan will bring you back in time to the Main Road as it was in the past century. His commentary will give you insights on the buildings and their interesting inhabitants.

10:00am and 1:00pm Walking Tour the Old Burying Ground (Cemetery) of the First Presbyterian Church (1 hour)

Tour guide: Melissa Andruski, Librarian at the Southold Library (Historical Research)

Melissa will guide you in a stroll through the Old Burying Ground’s rows of headstones and box tombs, some dating back to the 17th century, noting family names, styles of stones, epitaphs, and other interesting features. You’ll visit plots and stones from the 19th and 20th centuries including the Cosden Mausoleum.

10-12:30 Bus Tour of Southold Town (2.5 hours): The Founding Families Tour of Southold Town

Tour Guide: Jim Grathwohl, North Fork native son, First Families descendant and preservationist

Jim will lead you on the tour of Southold Towns’ special historic sites and landmarks. You will discover and relive your Founding Family’s unique and interesting roots. The tour will begin in Southold and will take you on a journey of discovery to the west (Laurel) and to the east (Orient).

2pm Guided Tour of the Horton Point Lighthouse at the Nautical Museum

(1 hour) (This tour will be repeated on Sunday, June 4 at 2pm.)

Tour Guides: The Keepers of Horton Point Lighthouse

The tour will highlight the history and operations of the lighthouse, including the tragedy of the SS Commodore and the dangers of Dead Man’s Cove, the construction of the lighthouse and its keepers, a special visit to the tower where the operation of the light will be explained.
