Don’t miss experiencing our new exhibit, In addition to our artifacts from our collection such as uniforms, ration books and recruiting posters, the exhibit will come alive with a soldier telling us his story. In 1917 at the age of 22, Carl Vail left his family farm here in Southold to join the U.S. Army, and served our country during WWI.During and after that time, Carl shared his memories with colleagues and family.

By visiting the exhibit, you can begin to imagine what it was like to be a sibling or parent left behind while soldiers went off to war.Our Bainbridge intern, Alex Bradley, assumes the persona of Carl Vail, after reading and studying his letters home and reminiscences shared.History comes alive when we put ourselves in the place of past Southold residents while they experienced wartime fears, joys and new approaches to everyday life.
