SOUTHOLD, NY. The annual art auction, featuring the works of both living and past artists of eastern Long Island, is being sponsored by the Southold Historical Society. The auction, which will take place on Saturday, April 26th, 2014, will feature works by a number of important local painters, photographers, and artisans. The event will benefit the Society as well as the many living artists participating in the event.

"Village Scene" by Whitney M. Hubbard

In addition to works by living artists, which will include John Crimmins, Laura Westlake, Dominick DiLorenzo, Jada Rowland, Lee Cleary, and Barbara Zegarek, there will be a number of works by painters of our recent past. Some of the featured items include landscape and seascape paintings by Caroline M. Bell, Whitney M. Hubbard, Albert Latham, Otto J. Kurth, and Franklin G. Brooks.

Other artists whose works will be offered for sale worked in a more modernist vane, and include award winning color field and abstract painter Sherron Francis and the late, noted painter and printmaker, Lowell Nesbitt. Items from a number of artists estates – including works by WPA artist Agnes Mills and paintings by Irma Braham – will also be included.

"The art auction is a great way for both long time and new residents to support the artists of our region," stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society. "The Society is very proud that half of all the money raised at this event will go to support the participating artists," he continued.

The location of the event, the Castello di Borghese Vineyard, is one of the oldest and most important of the wineries located on the North Fork. Set amidst the vines, the vineyard's tasting room and large reception area are the perfect spot for an auction. "We are delighted to have the support of the vineyard and its owners, Prince Marco and Princess Ann Marie Borghese," continued Fleming.

The preview will begin at 6:00 pm, with the auction beginning at 7pm. There is a $10 entry donation, which includes wine and hors d'oeuvres. The entry donation is intentionally kept low to help promote lively bidding on the items being offered for sale.

To see images of the works that will be up for sale at the auction, please visit the Society website www.southoldhistoricalsociety.org and click "Auction of Fine Art" at the left hand of your screen. Live, on-line bidding with detailed catalog entries will be available through www.liveauctioneers.com about a week before the auction.
