Southold Historical Society to Host Grenning Gallery Exhibit:
"Plein Air Painting: It's a Global Sport"

SOUTHOLD, NY.  The Southold Historical Society is pleased to once again be partnering with The Grenning Gallery of Sag Harbor to host a painting exhibition entitled  "Plein Air Painting: It's a Global Sport."  The exhibit will be held at the Reichert Family Center's Cosden Price Gallery, located at 54127 Main Road in Southold. An opening reception will occur on Friday, May 31st, 2013 from 5:30-7:00pm.

Grenning Gallery was founded to help support classically trained artists, many of whom travel the world in search of interesting subjects. This show will contain highlights from our painters who have travelled to Croatia, Italy, Ireland, California, and of course the East End of Long Island.  "We are delighted to again work with the Grenning Gallery and its wonderful group of artists," stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society.

Notable among the group for his peripatetic painting schedule is the young American painter Marc Dalessio. He has travelled, from his long term base in Florence, to most countries in Europe as well as to Burma, India, Africa and Fiji. There are several major landscape paintings from Tuscany in this show, but the small sketches from Dalessio's recent trip to Fiji are bright and beautifully executed.

This show will also feature Karl Dempwolf, a German native now residing in California. Dempwolf uses both Impressionist AND Expressionist techniques to bring his landscapes to life. His mastery of values is most evident in one of the major paintings in this show, "Crystal Lake."

Ben Fenske finds any subject outside relevant for a plein air painting. The exhibit contains a few interesting pieces of his, including "Steak " which brings to life a picnic in the backyard of his studio in Chianti . This is probably the most original plein air painting made, portraying a thick florentine slab of meat sitting on its glorious white wax paper.

Nelson H. White of Shelter Island, Waterford Ct., and Florence Italy will exhibit several beautiful local, Nantucket, Bahamian and Italian scenes. Thomas Shelford will show two framed mono prints of his surfing beaches in Montauk and Amagansett. There will also be a few smaller works by the Grenning Gallery artists Ramiro, Melissa Sanchez Franklin and others.

This exhibit will be on display at the Reichert Family Center's Cosden Price Gallery Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 1-4pm through June 29, 2013.
