Stitchers of the North Fork

July 31, 2013

Stitchers of the North Fork

August 2 through 31, 2003

The art of hand stitching and weaving is as old as time.  On early Long Island settlers had to rely on their own ability to acquire wool and flax and spin it into thread for the production of clothing and other utilitarian item such as rags, rugs, etc.  In modern times, stitching has become less about necessity and more about art.

Today, groups of devotees work at the creation of items based on this ancient tradition.  Days & evenings are spent at work, not watching television or "surfing the web."  Those involved spend their time preserving a form of handwork that has today, on the industrial level, altogether disappeared.

In this exhibition, the Stitchers Guild located on the north fork will display some of the amazing work that they create today.  A selection of objects, from wall hangings to clothing and decorative items, will be on view at the Currie-Bell House Gallery from August 2nd through 31st, 2003.
